The
QM2000 board is the heart of the LD2000 system. The LD2000 software cannot run
without this powerful computer-on-a-board being installed into the
PCI bus on a host PC, or located somewhere on an Ethernet network. The host can be either a desktop computer or a
notebook computer with a PCI-bus docking
station. (For networked applications, see the information about the
QM2000.NET.)
Each QM2000 controls one
projector head (an XY set of scanners, color control, and DMX
outputs). For controlling
multiple projectors, you can put up to 30 QM2000 boards in a
single computer, or connect up to 30 QM2000 boards over a network,
using either PCs or the new QM2000.NET hardware platform.
Award-winning capabilities
The QM2000 has its own VL-RISC/DSP microprocessor, the Motorola
ColdFire, and its own on-board memory. In fact, it is so sophisticated, the
host PC computer is used primarily for hard drive storage. The QM2000 can even
work outside of a PC, as a standalone computer (such as in the
Lasershow Player CD-ROM
playback device.)
For its advanced features, the QM2000 board was awarded the 2000
International Laser Display Association Technology Achievement
Award.
Board description
On the left side of the QM2000 board, you can see the two output connectors:
-
A DB-25 female connector is the same as the ILDA standard connector for
laser projectors. You can directly connect to ILDA standard projectors. An
adapter cable is provided so that you can also connect to projectors
compatible with Pangolin's older QM32 board. Click
here for the ILDA connector pinouts.
-
A DB-15 connector is used for DMX-512
output. Pangolin supplies an adapter
cable to go from the DB-15 to standard DMX-type 5-pin XLR connectors.
At the top is the memory module. You can have only one memory module at a
time; this card can have a capacity of up to 1GB RAM! Note that
the QM2000 uses single-sided memory modules. You could use double-sided memory,
but since the QM2000 addresses only one side, you'll lose half the memory
capacity. Also, we recommend only certain types (brands) of memory which have
been tested by Pangolin. For these reasons, it is best if you purchase memory
through Pangolin -- it is guaranteed to be fully compatible, and you'll be able
to use all the RAM you pay for. Click here for more
information on the memory modules.
On the right side is the Expansion connector. This
allows the functions of the QM2000 to be expanded by connecting
additional hardware. One example is a special
network adapter board made by
Pangolin, which allows the QM2000 to be connected over a
network. Another example is that the QM2000 can be connected
directly to a standard
CD-ROM player.
In the middle is the security hologram, located on the PCI controller
chip. Each hologram has the serial
number of the board. This lets you develop shows and frames that can be accessed
only from specified boards (i.e., you specify which serial numbers can play the
shows and frames).
The board is well-protected by the long row of resistors you see
between the output connectors and the rest of the board. This will make the QM2000 more robust than previous
laser controller boards. Optoisolators are not needed on
the QM2000.
