CADA-MOD board
CADA-MOD board for ADAT recorders
|
|
|
|
|
|
Up
until around the year 2000, the Alesis ADAT digital tape recorder
was the most widespread, universal medium
for exchanging laser shows. For example, was used for many years by the International Laser Display
Association to judge and display shows for the annual ILDA Awards. It was
popular because it was relatively inexpensive,
and used widely available S-VHS videotape (or hard disk
drives on the latest model) for recording. The major drawback, however, is
that an unmodified ADAT can't directly record laser signals
due to the inability to record DC.

T

o record laser signals, Pangolin developed
solutions for each type of ADAT digital tape recorder:
-
For the original black-face Alesis ADAT and similar Fostex RD-8, you can make the

process.
If you have an electronics background, you
should be able to perform the modification yourself. Click here for
information about the booklet.

Alesis ADAT-XT
and XT-20
Modify by installing the CADA-MOD board,
or CADA-MOD
Plus DMX board
|
|
-
In the fall of 1995, Alesis introduced the ADAT-XT and similar Fostex CX-8.
Then in 1998, Alesis introduced the ADAT XT-20. For these
models, a special modification board is necessary. This mounts to the Alesis
"CADA" board and thus is known as the "CADA-MOD". There are
two versions of the CADA-MOD. One is standard, the other adds the ability to
record DMX-512 control signals (used in the lighting industry).
Pangolin has
officially discontinued sales of the CADA-MOD and CADA-MOD
Plus DMX boards. At this point, we recommend you use a computer running
Pangolin's Autoplay program, or use our
Flashback 3 Laser
Controller.

Alesis ADAT
HD24
Modified by Pangolin for laser output only
|
|
-
In 2002,
Alesis introduced the ADAT HD24. This is not a tape-based unit at
all, but instead uses removable hard disk drives. This requires a different modification
altogether and is NOT done with a board.
Pangolin performs a modification on channels 1-6,
9-14 and 17-22 so that these channels can reproduce
laser signals from DC to around 20kHz with
Pangolin-compatible signal levels. Note that this
modification is only for output (playback) of laser
signals, not for input (recording).
Also note that a DMX option is not available for the
HD24 at this time. For more information
contact Pangolin.
